How to Conduct an In-Person Meeting with Public Officials
Before the Meeting
- Prepare your personal arts story
- Prepare information on how your organization uses state funds (DDOA grants) to make a difference in the community (if you represent an arts organization)
- Bring your business cards or something with your contact information
- Bring a notepad and pen to take notes
- Print out the brochures on this page
During the Meeting
Introduce Yourself
- Thank them for the meeting and for supporting the arts
- Explain who you are and the organization you represent
- Explain your personal arts story and personal and the issues you care about
Make an Ask
- Ask them about their legislative priorities and what they value about the arts
- Discuss the information and data points you brought
- Make the ask
- Take pictures
Be a Resource
- Offer to be a resource for information on Delaware arts and culture
- Leave behind your materials (the Arts Work for Delaware handout is a great option!)
- TIP: If you don’t know the answer to a question, don’t try to answer on the spot! Instead, say that you will find the answer, and use it as an opportunity to follow up after the meeting with more information.
After the Meeting
- Send a follow-up email
- Post and tag your pictures on social media (with their permission)
